conch bar caves

Large natural cave regarded as sacred place by preColumbian indians. Legend is that first man was created by gods and emerged from the caves.

excursion boat

Excursion boat. Larger model is being finished. The waters to the south of Middle Caicos are known as the Caicos Bank. They are shallow and boats with little draft are necessary to traverse them. Because the area is difficult to visit much of it is unspoiled.

frigate bird colony

A small mangrove cay is located several miles down the south coast of Middle Caicos. It is the nesting area for a frigate bird colony. As our boat approaches the colony, most of the adults fly away leaving a few adult females and the young birds. The young can be up to 18 inches before thay leave the nest.

frigate bird nest

The young have white feathers and develop darker plumage as the approach the time to leave the nest. As we approach the nesting cay, we see dozzens of young birds peering intently at us. The bird on the left is an adult female.

barracuda The Caicos Bank is home to snapper, grouper, grunt, and barracuda. The water is shallow, mostly less than 8 ft. deep. Many areas are 1 to 3 ft deep. There are many areas with rocks or coral. Snapper and grouper hide in the coral. Channels between coral formations are favorite hiding places for barracuda. We caught this one on our first pass down one of the channels. He was 3 1/2 ft. long.
sea turtle Sea turtles can often be seen on the surface of the waters surrounding Middle Caicos. They dive down to the bottom to eat grass and periodically come up for air.
