13th Annual FOOLS REGATTA
June 14, 2003, Saturday, 11am

FEATURING NINE TRADITIONAL CAICOS SLOOPS
Rotary Park Beach Access -West of Le Deck/ Sibbone Hotel

photo by Marta Morton, harbourclub@tciway.tcFrom humble beginnings 13 years ago, the Fools Regatta has grown hand in hand with the Provo community. Originally held as close as possible to April Fools Day, the event was moved five years ago to early summer when business folk tended to be less busy.

The Regatta's main emphasis is on TCI culture and heritage. We are expecting nine locally built Caicos sloops representing all of the Caicos Islands on the start line this June 14th.

Thus far, as last year, PPC has pledged $2500 in support of the Caicos Sloops. Johnston/Leeward Ltd, The Palms and the TCI Tourist Board are all on board for $1000 each. This prize money is extremely important in helping to perpetuate local boat building.

Big boat race sponsored by Mount Gay Rum.
Skipper's meeting @ 11:00 am on the beach.

GOING FOR THE GOLD
In addition to the local boats, there will be many other boats going for the Gold (the Golden case off Mount Gay Rum from Discount Liquors). The various boats of all shapes and sizes that gird for battle on Regatta day are roughly handicapped, and the first cruising boat over the line carries the prestigious prize of rum.

HOBIE RACES
While all of the big boats are negotiating the Ocean race course, a number of races with Hobie 13's are held inside the reef. This is a chance for kids to run a couple of closely monitored events. Also, the old-timers get to race the little boats after finishing the big boat race.

RESORT CHALLENGE
One of the most evenly contested events is the Resort Challenge. Every resort from Parrot Cay to Beaches enter a Hobie 13, the winner holding bragging rights for the year. Returning champ, Mike Rosati of Ocean Club, is looking for a first ever repeat. Go Mikey!

The final boating competition will be the first annual Great Raft Race, the most intensely discussed event of the Fools Regatta. Teams of 2 to 6 persons must negotiate a homemade raft around a quarter mile course, prizes awarded for construction, speed, and attitude. There are already 20 entries for this event !! Starts later on in the afternoon... Don't miss the historical first annual homemade raft race in Turks & Caicos Islands - and be sure to bring your camera.
