Turks and Caicos Islands Government

Presently the TCI is an internal-governing Overseas Territory with a ministerial system of government. The country operates from the 1988 Constitution which provides for a Governor appointed by the HM the Queen, an Executive Council and a legislative Council.

Executive branch

The Executive Council deals with the affairs of the Government. It is presided over by His Excellency the Governor and is made up of the Ministers of Government along with the Attorney General and the Chief Secretary.

Head of government: Chief Minister Hon Dr. Michael Misick (since 15 August 2003)

Cabinet: Executive Council consists of three ex officio members and five appointed by the governor from among the members of the Legislative Council

Turks and Caicos Islands Government Legislative branch

The House of Parliament is responsible for the passage of laws, monitor Government's policies and bring to account the Executive Branch on behalf of the electorate. The House of Parliament consist of all the elected members on both sides along with five other persons, the Attorney General, the Governor's Appointed Member, the Government's Appointed Member, the Opposition's Appointed Member and the Deputy Governor. The House of Parliament is presided over by a Speaker assisted by a Deputy Speaker.

• Elections: last held February 9th 2007, Next Election February 2011.

• PNP now holds the majority in the House of Parliament. PNP 13, PDM 2

Constitution: Introduced 30 August 1976; suspended in 1986; restored and revised 5 March 1988

Legal system: Based on laws of England and Wales, with a small number adopted from Jamaica and The Bahamas

Suffrage: 18 years of age; universal

History: The Turks and Caicos became a separate colony after the Bahamas achieved independence

Dependency status: Overseas territory of the UK

Capital: Cockburn Town (on Grand Turk)

Electors

The individuals that are allowed to select our representatives are set out in the Elections Ordinance and in the Constitution. A potential voter must either have been born in the Turks & Caicos Islands, or was born to a father or mother that was born in the Turks & Caicos Islands, or he must be a Belonger. In addition, such a person must be 18 years old and must have lived in the Turks & Caicos for a minimum of 12 months in the 2 years prior to the date used to qualify voters for an election.
